Peer Support Specialist (Non-credit)

Short Term

Peer Support Specialists are people living in recovery with mental illness and/or substance use disorder and who provide support to others whom can benefit from their lived experiences. The Peer Support Specialist program provides acknowledgment that the peer has met a set of requirements necessary to provide support to individuals with mental health or substance use disorder.

Peer Support Specialists are certified to work in Veteran Affairs Offices, all levels of care within substance use facilities, in jails, inpatient mental health hospitals, emergency departments, community agencies, homeless shelters, group homes, churches, YMCA, vocational rehabilitation, peer support programs, and facilitate support groups.

 Prerequisites

  • Proof of high school diploma or high school equivalency
  • Complete the Verification Form

MHT-3100D Peer Spt: Crisis Intervention

This 96-hour course will provide the information and resources necessary for individuals to work as Certified Peer Support Specialist in the state of North Carolina. The course follows the North Carolina approved curriculum Extending Your Portfolio Peer Support Training. This course integrates hands on experience referred to as community engagement meetings in which students travel 5x times to one of ²Ê¿â±¦µäapps Campuses to attend and receive first-hand experience coupled with biweekly online learning.
